The PhD Innovation Excellence in Clean Energy Transportation took place in Finland,

Switzerland, and Israel, with the participation of more than 100 students from 22 countries.

The project was led by Prof. Tanja Kallio (Aalto University, Finland),

Dr. Jan Van herle (EPFL, Switzerland), and Prof. Dario Dekel (Technion, Israel).

We would like to thank EIT Urban Mobility for the initiative and financial support.

Clean and efficient transportation is becoming both crucial and practical with every year passing. Electric vehicles are a primary direction to realize that, and powering them can be done using the new generation, (alkaline) anion-exchange membrane fuel cells. This project, including researchers and entrepreneurs from Switzerland, Finland, Germany and Israel, will focus on training a small, exclusive group of PhD students towards the innovative challenges in electrifying urban transportation with fuel cells, hence helping cities to mitigate pollution and enhance accessibility of this green technology. This will be done by a series of short, focused seminars to be held in the different partner locations. The special, innovative structure of the project seminars will allow them to be scaled and repeated in the coming years to train a growing number of high-end technological professionals.

Supplying technological Innovation training to a selected group of doctoral students researching fuel cells (FCs) will push entrepreneurship for clean-energy transportation. Polluting cities with carbon dioxide, NOx and particles emitted from vehicles is unreasonable. Powering city transportation with fuel cells – an electrochemical cell, just like batteries – will provide a clean means of transportation. Solving the technological challenges on the way to affordable FCs requires scientific knowledge, but also the innovative spirit to bring up new ideas, and the entrepreneurship know-how to make them happen.

Seminars:

13-15th October 2020 – Aalto Finland

10-12th November 2020 – EPFL Switzerland
